Ten Things You Should Store In Evernote

title

I have become an Evernote Evangelist! My husband officially hates it because he says that according to me 'every problem he encounters seems to be solvable by using Evernote.' However, he is soon to get his first iphone and will, I believe, join the cult!

What can I say? I love it! Okay, so it won't solve world hunger but here is a list, in no particular order, of things you can store in Evernote.

1. Passwords for software

I use One Password for storing my logins for websites but it is great to have somewhere for all of my passwords that come with software I have downloaded for my Mac. I used to store them in a folder in my mail app but that has been cleaned out and I now have a notebook called 'Software' that holds all my software info.

2. Recipes

So many of the recipes I use originate on the web. For example, the BBC Good Food section has a killer recipe for lemon drizzle cake.

I use the Evernote clipper add on on my browser to clip the recipe to a note book so that when I am out shopping and desperate for ideas for dinner that evening i can look up my Recipe note book and instantly have a list of ingredients I need to buy.

3. PDF Books

This one is definitely for the Premium User as some books can be very large. But I have a growing collection of PDF books and Magazines that often sit in a folder on my computer gathering dust. I been slowing moving these to my Evernote account so that they are easily accessed.

The Evernote premium account allows for searching in PDF's so I have found that I am using all the reference books I have acquired much frequently.

4. Script and Code Snippets

When I am setting up websites I have to set the server directory with certain php options. These tend to be the same for most sites so they are now in my code notebook. The same goes for my css reset, javascript, jquery and other snippets of reusable code.

5. Twitter Links

When I am browsing my twitter account there are a lot of tweets recommending articles or design inspiration. I post these links directly to my evernote email address so that they appear in my evernote account. I can then refer to these links at a later date.

6. Design Inspiration

When I am browsing the web I often come across a site that has a well designed feature such as a login form or interesting footer layout.

These interesting sections all get screen shot directly ito my inspiration note book and tagged with words like 'footer', 'login form', 'layout' etc so that I can refer to them when I come to look for inspiration for a site design. Being able to clip a portion of a screen means I can be inspired by sites withoutthe temptation to copy their designs outright.

7. Travel Details

I have become a paperless traveller. All my itineries, hotel details and flight information get scanned and added to my Evernote app. I just need to ensure my iphone doesn't get stolen on holiday!

8. To Do Lists

I find it useful to make to do lists for the day / week or month. There is a great satisfaction to be had in ticking them off one by one. I have been doing this in Evernote so I can access the lists on my Mac, laptop and iphone. This experiece has been helped by the recent purchase of an Iphone App called Egretlist. Here's what the Evernote blog says about Egretslist:

Egretlist is an iPhone to-do app that links directly to your Evernote account. It finds all of your notes that contain checkboxes, lays them out in an intuitive way, and syncs any changes you make right back into Evernote. The app not only displays to-do items, but it also shows any related content in the given note, including images and attachments.

9. Guitar tabs and Lyrics

I have recently taken up playing the guitar after a long gap. I find Evernote the idea place to store lyrics and tabs clipped from sites on the web. I can read these from my iphone or display them on my computer (I am a bed room guitarist only - no audience allowed!)

10. Audio Files of My Kids

it is amazing how quickly children grow up. We take lots of photographs and the video comes out on special occasions but sometimes I have found myself using the audio recording option on Evernote to take a quick, recording of Ella singing a song she made up or Ruby telling me some long, garbled story of something that happened in school that day or sneaking up to Joseph's bedroom (he is 10 and will never sing in public) and recording him singing away to some song on his radio. Those wee audio snippets are very precious!
